Tampa Tribune: Tolls to rise on Veterans, other Tampa Bay roads in 2012

If you drive on the Veterans Expressway, get ready to pay more next year.

The same is true for the Suncoast Parkway, the Sunshine Skyway, the Pinellas Bayway and the Polk Parkway.

On pretty much every toll road in the Tampa Bay area and across the state – with the exception of the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway locally – tolls are going up by 25 cents per stop.

The increase takes effect June 30 of next year.

Florida Department of Transportation officials say they had no choice but to raise the tolls; the increases were required by legislation that was passed in 2007.

"They gave us up to five years to start," said Christa Deason, spokeswoman for the turnpike. "We delayed as long as possible because of the economy, but now we are under the gun."

Most SunPass customers on the Veterans and Suncoast will not be affected by the increase, Deason said. However, at places such as Anderson Road and the Sugarwood Plaza, the quarter jump in rates will affect SunPass drivers as well.
