Tampa Tribune: Tampa officials criticized over delay in 43rd Street upgrades

City Council members lambasted Buckhorn administration officials on Thursday for not moving quickly enough to improve pedestrian safety along a traffic-choked strip of 43rd Street in East Tampa, where a pregnant woman was hit and killed last month.

Jean Dorzback, the city's transportation manager, told council members that the city is negotiating with a property owner off 43rd Street to provide an easement and allow city workers to move his fence further back from the road and install sidewalks.

The city was also talking with other property owners in the neighborhood for permission to trim several trees that have obscured street lights along the road, she told the board, and discussing with Tampa Electric executives about possibly upgrading street lights.

But the upgrades could take as long as three to four months to complete, Dorzback said.

"We have made this a priority," she said. "If we could get it done sooner, we would."

That didn't go over well with council members, who said they wanted action now.
