Two weeks after a Middleton High School freshman was struck by a pickup and killed while walking to school, Tampa City Council members will discuss how to make the area near the crash more pedestrian friendly.
Shenika Davis, 15, was crossing East Hillsborough Avenue near 26th Street on Oct. 5 when she was hit by an eastbound GMC Sierra.
She died at the scene. Her funeral was Saturday, family members said.
The day after the crash, Councilman Frank Reddick asked for city staff members to determine how to make the area safer for pedestrians. The request will be discussed at Thursday's city council meeting.
State officials said from 2005 to 2009 there were 12 pedestrian-related crashes on Hillsborough from 22nd to 30th Street, with one death and 11 injuries.
Hillsborough is a state road. Jean Dorzback, city transportation director, said city staff members will tell council members Thursday that they have asked the state Department of Transportation to perform a road safety audit in the area near the crash.
State transportation officials would analyze crash data, and observe students, pedestrians and traffic there at different times of the day, Dorzback said.
City transportation staff members likely will return to the council in about 90 days with more information, she said.
