Tampa Tribune: Platt Street Bridge is back in business

One-hundred-and-five days of aggravation leading to rush-hour headaches, short tempers and horn honking are over, or at least for the most part, with the long-awaited opening of the Platt Street Bridge this morning.

The $14 million renovation of the historic span over the lower Hillsborough River opened at 5:30 a.m. today, and it wasn't long before the regular flow of morning traffic found its route over the span, easing the bumper-to-bumper, stop and go-slow commute on roads leading to the Kennedy Boulevard Bridge from South Tampa.

Finally.

Three out of four lanes streamed into downtown and it didn't come a minute too soon.

Phew. It was a long three-and-a-half months.

"I'm so happy," grinned Rhandi Emanouil who lives on Harbor Island and works in Hyde Park. "I'm so happy."
