Tanks, trains and stampeding animals are being used by the Florida Department of Transportation to raise awareness of fatal pedestrian and bicycle crashes in the Tampa Bay area.
The campaign, called See The Blindspots, launched on the Internet last week. The commercial, which will air 504 times on local television from Nov. 16 to March 15, shows a man trying to cross a downtown Tampa intersection as computer-generated tanks, trains and elephants storm down the street.
The TV spot, along with print advertisements, say, "It's not a car to a pedestrian" and "Would we see our roads differently if cars weren't cars?"
Another clip on the website shows a montage of pedestrians around the world being hit by vehicles. The graphic commercial will only be shown on the campaign's website and not on television, said state transportation spokeswoman Marian Scorza.
"We wanted to do something different," Scorza said. "Yes, it may shock people, but we want people to see the blind spots. People are talking about it. That's what we want."
