While the rest of us drive to and from work, grimly staring at the cars in front of us, T.J. Connors glides along with a smile on his face.
The 27-year-old tattoo artist commutes on a skateboard. Sometimes he kicks his way along a path in Venetian Waterway Park. Other times he uses a long pole for what's called land paddling.
Either way, Connors looks like he's enjoying himself.
"It's my happy time, my me time," he says. "A lot of times I'll be thinking about what I need to do at work. A lot of times I'll be thinking about the music my band is working on."
Connors isn't the only Gulf Coast commuter who finds a different way to roll, though the alternatives are far from mainstream. Some people ride the bus. Others live near their jobs and walk to work.
Then there are those who work at home. They can wear pajamas for the five-second commute from the bedroom to their living room.
