Sarasota Herald-Tribune: No roundabouts for U.S. 41 Bypass?

Back to the future we go with the review of the review of the review concerning the improvement of the U.S. 41 Bypass in Venice.

The latest study came out on Friday, not in finished form, but as a Power Point presentation of numbers and charts produced by the Renaissance Planning Group in Maryland.

Guess what? The favored design, the one the experts will recommend, is just about what the Florida Department of Transportation envisioned in 1994.

It calls for six-laning all 2.3 miles of roadway and no roundabouts at the busiest intersections with Venice Avenue and Center Road.

This may be the most studied section of asphalt in South County, and we're not done yet. The review now heads to two committees before Dec. 12, when it reaches the Sarasota/Manatee Metropolitan Planning Organization, which prioritizes road projects that use federal money.

Construction will cost an estimated $72 million to $94 million, so no one wants to make a mistake.
