Last week, county commissioners asked staff to contact the state and ask for a time extension to finish the Hernando Beach channel dredging project.
Just in case, commissioners said.
Given recent delays and other setbacks by the contractor, commissioners want to hedge their bets and convince the state of its good faith efforts in getting the dredge finished.
But the contractor, BCPeabody, appears to be more confident than the county.
In its most recent correspondence, BCPeabody's modified schedule indicates it plans to complete the dredging of the channel by Dec. 20, a full 11 days earlier than obligated under contract.
The modified schedule shows that three mechanical dredges have been deployed on the project and equipment is in place to facilitate operations.
