Bay News 9: Thonotosassa residents worried about trucks, speeding

Speeding cars and heavy trucks are causing problems for Thonotosassa residents who live near Fowler Avenue.

By the time Fowler Avenue extends into Thonotosassa, it's a seemingly quiet little road - vastly different from the multi-lane thoroughfare in Tampa.

But Betty Mentzel and her neighbors say the road isn't so quiet. They are committed to keeping their little road from becoming more like its big brother.

"For years they had been trying to do something about this traffic, and it was impossible," Mentzel said.

The problem seems to be a combination of speeding traffic and heavy trucks. A sign tells trucks over two axles to stay off the road, but the sign can be difficult to see as it is nearly covered by trees.

In addition, there's no matching sign on the other end at Fowler Avenue and U.S. 301.

Sign or no sign, it doesn't seem to matter. The big trucks just keep on coming.

And with no sidewalks, Mentzel said the danger is very real for pedestrians.

Who in Florida respect pedestrians or small cars? I would better say, who in this country does?
