Bay News 9: TBARTA 'School Pool' covers more ground, participation up 20 percent

A Tampa Bay Area Regional Transit Authority report states more students are carpooling to school, as participation in the TBARTA "School Pool" program has increased 20 percent.

For now, the ride-sharing program matches parents of participating Pinellas and Hillsborough County schools with other parents who want to carpool to and from a given school. Officials said the program is looking to expand into Citrus, Hernando, Pasco and Manatee counties.

Whether a student lives outside a busing zone or a parent wants to save on gas, TBARTA officials said the program helps with congestion at school drop-off sites, saves parents money and gives families the option to share transportation responsibilities.
