Potential Rail Transit / BRT - Pinellas Alternatives Analysis
Earlier this year, TBARTA, in partnership with three other agencies, began an Alternatives Analysis (AA) in Pinellas County to determine the best transit modes and alignments to connect downtown St. Petersburg, downtown Clearwater, and the Gateway area. An AA is an important step in the process of applying for federal funding. During this step, a list of many possible alignments within a given study area is slowly narrowed down to a single alignment, referred to as the "Locally Preferred Alternative." Currently, the project is in the third phase, which includes additional public outreach, selecting the stations, technology and costs. The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) has done a number of studies on transit and transit-oriented development. http://www.psta.net/plansandreports.html
Pinellas County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is a resource agency for transportation planning. Mandated by federal and state law, the MPO is responsible for establishing priorities to meet short-term (next 5 years) and long-term multi-modal transportation needs for Pinellas County and its municipalities. http://www.pinellascounty.org/mpo/
Throughout 2010, the Pinellas County Transportation Taskforce met to discuss the future of transportation in Pinellas County and provide recommendations to the County Commission. http://www.pinellascounty.org/ttf/
